Perhaps the only thing in this whole world which is used by everyone is clothes. Everyone requires to wear clothes. Clothing has been a part of civil society for ages. Since the inception of civilizations all over the world, we have observed many drastic changes in the political and socio-economic spheres. One of the biggest changes that many historians and anthropologists unanimously agreed upon was the adaptation of clothing by the people.
Scientifically speaking, the primary reason to wear clothes is just to protect ourselves from the different climatic conditions because the human skin is quite soft and cannot bear extreme weather harshness. So, it’s the human body’s demand to wear warm clothes in winters and light cotton clothes in summers to allow air to cross and to absorb the sweat released from the body. And according to social scientists, with the creation of civil societies throughout the world, wearing clothes also became a social norm to prevent embarrassment in the public sphere. Anyways, let’s go through the beautiful journey of clothing in a brief.
In ancient times, just after the beginning of civilizations, the idea of clothing was still very simple and the people still used to wear animal skin and some clothes made tree leaves. Gradually, spinning and weaving techniques were invented, of course, the modern-day technique and it was only then the people started wearing clothes made of some kind of fabric. Then more developments took place to satisfy the human needs and to beat the harsh weather conditions.
All the four major civilizations of this period laid a very strong foundation in developing the clothing and textiles which we admire today. The very famous ‘silk route’ which connected East Asia with the Middle East and Europe via Central Asia was built during this period.
Then came the Medieval Era. This was the time when the textile industry grew a lot as many new developments took place. Moreover, this was the time when umpteen number of expeditions were done by many travellers all across the globe and especially from Europe. So, for spending days in ships, they needed more comfortable clothes and thus it was the demand of the situation for new developments. The biggest highlight was that by this time, the need of the humans was already fulfilled and humans had started looking forward towards their wants.
The modern era or sometimes called as the Colonial Era saw many transformations in this period as far as clothing is considered. The Europeans for their military expeditions required different types of uniforms. Also, the great industrial revolution changed the technology of the manufacturing fabric forever as many new industrial machines were invented which made human work so easy and fast at the same time. Above all, the 20th century witnessed two world wars. The majority of the men were busy in fighting in foreign lands so to maintain the economy back at home, it was very significant that the industries should not stop operating and manufacturing.
The different governments opened the gates of the industries for the women to compensate for the absence of men. So, for the very first time females were seen wearing pants and trousers with shirts which were way more comfortable than the corsets. It was indeed a very historical event. So, again there was a shift on the basis of clothing manufacturing as the clothes were made unisex(of course size differed).
Modern Contemporary Era
The Modern Contemporary Era is just so diverse. The mobility and the settlement in different locations are quite easy and accessible to more people. Thus, there is a sense of cross-culture among people. And when we talk about culture, the first thing that hits our mind is clothes. So, today anyone can be seen wearing clothes belonging to any culture or geographical area and which is again a very important event as far as clothing is concerned. Moreover, in the past few decades, many new and different types of clothes and dresses have been customized to make human life more easy, efficient and comfortable at the same time. But the worst part is most of these clothes come with huge price tags on it and we have to sacrifice sometimes. But don’t worry when the After Christmas Sale is here to offer huge discounts over a variety of clothing products. Many brands offer discounts till the New Year.
The clothing and textile industry has come a very long way. From basic clothes made from leaves to the fine muslin cloth which can pass through a finger ring, the journey has been so phenomenal and during its journey, clothing has seen different eras, wars, empires, love, and peace. Today living in the 21st century, we have thousands of options to wear on a single event but why settle for less when you can have more. Moreover, many big companies are investing massively in the research and development of fabric for a particular use, for instance- military, sports, manual labor, etc just to make human life more and more comfortable.
